Gareth Ainsworth has been confirmed as manager of Shrewsbury Town manager after the sacking of former boss David Hurst. Ainsworth, who managed Wycombe Wanderers from the fourth tier of English football to the Championship, struggled as QPR boss.
In that role, the Lancastrians lasted just eight months. Ainsworth’s successor isn’t faring much better, so it’s arguably not fair to judge the former midfielder at his time at Loftus Road.
Being a long-serving manager isn’t easy, and it’s a dying breed. Mark Robbins, I will be intrigued to see how he fares in his next job. The former United striker, due to the cutthroat nature of football these days, won’t get eight seasons at one club.
Paul Tisdale was another at Exeter. When he went to MK Dons, he too soon left his position. The point I am trying to make is that there isn’t an infrastructure. To club owners, and in particular, to Shrewsbury, give Gareth time.
If managers were given time across the board, more ex-players would go into management. Why else do you think they’re going into punditry? Job security is one reason.
