In a night filled with Champions League shocks, Sporting Lisbon, the league leaders of Portugal, beating FC Porto 4-1 was the biggest shock. The reigning champions are some nine points ahead of their closest rivals.
That has yet to stop the sceptics from being sceptical, but maybe now they should sit up and take notice. The Champions League winners of two seasons ago went ahead through an early Phil Foden goal.
This would be as good as it got for Pep’s men, as a Victor Gyokeres hat-trick and an Araujo goal consigned City to defeat, their second in a row. Elsewhere, defending champions Real Madrid also suffered a shock result, going down 3-1 to AC Milan.
Alvaro Morata, Malik Thiaw, and Tijjani Reinders scored goals to help the Italians claim all three points at the Bernabeu. Vinicius Junior scored for the hosts. Elsewhere, Liverpool will face Bayer Leverkusen, last term’s Bundesliga winners.
In what many were thinking would be a tight game, it would, in fact, turn out to be a dominant display by Liverpool. A hat-trick from Luis Diaz and a Coady Gakpo goal helped The Reds win.
A mention deserves to go to Celtic, who beat RB Leipzig 3-1. Goals from Kuhn and Hatate cancelled out Baumgartner’s opener.
