The season is just ten games old, but after losing to Bournemouth 2-0 last week and Newcastle 1-0 yesterday, a discussion can be created to argue that maybe The Gunners are out of title contention for another season.
Unfortunately, the North London side has a massive injury list to contend with, and to add further insult to injury, players like Thomas Partey have to fill in at right-back.
The Ghanian is a good player, but he needs to be right back. This position requires a specialist.
Pep Guardiola got away with it one season when he deployed Fabian Delph there; sorry, as a left-back in this case, but even the excellent Spaniard has gone on to spend money to try and bring in a professional in the position.
This is one issue, but Arsenal’s lack of a replacement for Martin Odegaard is a worry. As a result, the Gunners look like they still need a spark.
If only they had a replacement at the club. They did, but they couldn’t keep him happy. I am referring to Emile Smith-Rowe, of course. But in the world of FFP, something had to give, as Arsenal have spent big money to try and improve areas that they know they’re weak in.
Although not insurmountable, there is a seven-point difference between Liverpool, who are top, and Arsenal, who are sat in fourth with 18 points. Mikel Arteta will be hoping his Arsenal side won’t get any more injuries; they can’t afford any more.
It’s about time their luck with injuries changed for the better. Teams like Liverpool have fortunately stayed away for having bad luck in this regard.
The season is still young. Yours indeed argues that there is still plenty of the season to go and plenty of football left to play, but if the lead grows, it will be hard to argue against Liverpool winning the title.
If Arsenal are to stand a chance, they will need to work better as a unit (be together, tougher to beat, and have the knack to score goals). Havertz could be better up top, but he’s not a specialist player in the position.
You will need someone who can score 20+ goals to win a league title.
