Manchester City midfielder and Spanish international Rodri has won this year’s Balon d’or, beating off competition from Vinicius Junior and England international Jude Bellingham.

The Real Madrid duo finished second and third in Europe’s biggest footballing awards ceremony. Many in the world of football felt this decision is the correct one.

Yours truly is of the opinion that if Rodri didn’t win then Jude Bellingham should have won maybe. But then again, that opens up the debate as to what is the criterion to win the famous prize.

Goalkeepers never win the prize and it’s been a long time since a defender won the Balon d’or and even that was given to Fabio Cannavaro because Zidane got sent off in the World Cup final.

Football was meant to reset. Other players can win the trophy now, the fact that it was only more attacking players winning it is boring and a tad unfair. Rodri in this position as DM has been the best at in European football.

The fact that the former Atletico man has added goals to his repertoire only strengthens my case. In terms of Bellingham, I just felt having excelled with Dortmund in one position, excelled in his debut campaign with Real Madrid in another.

That is an outstanding achievement. There always has to be a loser and as harsh it may seem, this year it’s Vini Junior. The other year it was Lewandoswki and last year was Haaland.

It’s tough luck Vini, but Rodri has gone about his business in a quiet way he’s now won a Champions League too. The man needs his flowers.
