Premier League giants Manchester United have sacked their manager, Erik Ten Haag, after two and a half years in the job. The former Utrecht and Ajax manager is statistically among the best managers when it comes to win percentage.
As impressive and misleading as such a stat is, the fact that United finished eighth last season, their worst top-flight finish in Premier League history, surely meant ETH was living on borrowed time.
More showing in European competitions was needed.
When the managerial position was reviewed after the victorious FA Cup final, some were surprised to still have Ten Haag in a job. Personally, yours truly was one of those people.
Reportedly, Thomas Tuchel was spoken to last term, but those conversations didn’t bear fruit as the then Bayern Munich coach opted against a return to the Premier League.
Arguably reluctantly, then, United’s INEOS board was left with the tail between its legs and was forced to stick with the man that it seemed adamant about sacking.
In certain parts of the media, it was portrayed that INES was loyal, but the truth is that it appeared that they didn’t have a set candidate. This season, however, there have been rumours constantly swirling around that The Red Devils have been speaking to former Barca boss. Such an appointment seems strange, but it makes better sense with the former Barca manager having a good relationship with Omar Berrada, a former member of the board of The Catalan Club.
That is why some say Gareth Southgate is being offered the job, as he is on amicable terms with Sir Dave Brailsford and Dan Ashworth. One thing is for sure: former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy will be the new manager on an interim basis.
A former Man U striker getting the job to coach United on an interim basis sounds familiar; I. Why?
