After being shot all out for 46 in their first innings (their lowest total at home in test history), India’s batters second time round made a real fight to save the game and maybe miraculously win it.

The tourists, in reply to India’s 46, made 402 courtesy of Devon Conway (91) and Rachin Ravindra (134). These were crucial to the Black Caps’ posting such a big total, giving New Zealand a massive 356 lead.

At this point, India might have thought they were staring at an innings defeat. But the second time around, the Indians played with a determination that wasn’t there to an extent in the first innings.

Virat Kohli (70), captain Rohit Sharma (52), Rishabh Pant (99) and Safraz Khan, who scored 150 in the top. In their second innings, India made an admirable 462 all out, but having posted such a low score the first time meant that New Zealand needed 107 to win a test match in India for the first time since 1988.

Despite losing two wickets relatively cheaply, Will Young (48 not out) and Rachin Ravindra (39 not out) helped the tourists reach their target of 107, with the loss of just two wickets. So, New Zealand is 1-0 up in the series, and India will be looking to put that right in Pune.

The second test between the two sides will start on Thursday 24th, at 05:00 GMT.
