Pakistan, who are trailing England 1-0 in their current three-game series, have opted for a significant shake-up of their platying 11 in the second test, also in Multan. The headline casualty is former captain Babar Azam, who has been in terrible form.
Azam, who has scored a high of just 41 in the last 18 tests, is dropped, as are Naseem Shaan and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Abrar Ahmed, who fell ill during the first test, is also unavailable.
In a test that must be won, the hosts have surprisingly opted to use the same flat deck of the first test. Considering the last test, where over 1300 runs were scored in two innings, such a decision seems flawed.
Pakistan’s groundskeepers may know something we don’t. Kamran Ghulam and the spin quartet of Mehran Mumtaz, Sajid Khan, Zahid Mehmood and Noman Ali are all in the squad.
Ghulam has been waiting in the wings in International cricket for some time, so it could prove a valuable addition to the test side, as could Abu Huraira, who seems to have been around the Pakistan circuit for a very long but is still very young at the tender age of 21.
The 2009 T20 World Cup winners wanted changes. To this extent? I am not too sure, but now they have them, the players who have been brought in will want to justify being selected.
