Real Madrid, who have won the Champions League a record 14 times, and Bayern, who have won the tournament a respectable six times, suffered shock defeats in their games against Lille and Aston Villa, respectively.
The win for 1982 Champions League winners Villa in front of their home fans at Villa Park means they have a perfect 100% record in the tournament and have yet to concede a goal in their two games this term.
It also brings memories of when the sides last played each other, in that final of 82 and the Villains came out on top that night too.
As for their opponents Bayern, this was a crash back to earth, especially after they won 9-2 against Dinamo Zagreb in the opening game of this Champions League campaign.
Although not ideal for Vincent Kompany’s side, this is hardly a catastrophe. I argue that the new, changed, extended format gives teams a safety net to avoid the odd lousy result at this early stage of the competition.
In theory, the German giants Bayern Munich will be found and will progress with this slight blemish. The same could be said of the Spanish giants and holders of the Champions League, Real Madrid.
Los Blancos swept German side Stuttgart 3-1 in their first game, but in France against Lille, they were undone by a Jonathan David penalty. To keep up with the theme of shocks, Benfica, managed by former Wolves manager Bruno Lage, beat Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side 4-0.
Some can argue that this result—Benfica beating Los Colchoneros by such a heavy score—is not surprising. Former Champions League winners Juventus had to rely on a late winner from former Barcelona attacker Francisco Conceicao, who scored a late winner to help them overcome German side RB Leipzig.
Although most of the shocks will be credited to today’s matches, the one-side scoreline was last night at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, where Dortmund beat visiting Celtic 7-1. Karim Adeyemi got a hat trick, and Serhou Guirassy grabbed two on the night to compound Celtic’s misery
