Red Bull Leipzig have done what no other team could do in 35 domestic matches and beat defending Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 at the Bayer Arena.
Leverkusen, who won their first league title last season by being able to fight back from almost certain losing situations. Time and time again, one player from the German side would find a way to settle the game late on.
Although Bayer Leverkusen did have a minor wobble last season, Xabi Alonso’s men had already sealed the League deep down in autumn. Last season I want to argue that this side had won their domestic League based on their powers of recovery.
Frimpong, Grivaldo and Wirtz are just some of the players to got Bayer Leverkusen out of jail. This season, coming into the new campaign, they have been throwing away leads instead of returning to lead.
Last time out in the season opener against Borussia Monchengladbach they saved themselves with a late goal, but they did throw away a lead. In the game against Red Bull, they allowed a two-goal lead to slip and lost out to an 80th-minute winner.
Yes, the season is still young, but this is still an unwanted defeat.
