England came from behind to book a place in the European Championship for the second successive tournament after edging out 1988 European Champions Holland.
After much has been made the way Gareth Southgate’s England have been playing, they had the worst possible start after they fell behind to a superb Xavi Simmons strike.
It could have been easy for England to have wilted at this point, but to their enormous credit they got back into the game, all be it in fortunate circumstances. Three Lions captain Harry Kane bashed boots with Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries in the penalty area.
The referee deemed Dumfries the transgressor, and a penalty was awarded to England, which Kane duly dispatched. Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions were roaring and leaving fans purring for more as they saw their team play their best tournament performance.
Manchester City’s Phil Foden was running riot. The City man saw a superb effort come cannoning back off the post, as well as a finish after a mazy run being cleared off the line.
England were rampant until Holland changed things up, which closed spaces that were previously open. The Dutch went into more of a retreat but were able to pose a serious threat with set-pieces.
De Oranje were getting back into the game, which meant Gareth Southgate’s side had a storm to weather, which they did superbly. Noticing that the Netherlands’s centre-backs weren’t the quickest on the half-turn, Southgate brought on the pace of Ollie Watkins.
It would be Aston Villa striker Watkins who would make the difference by scoring the winning goal, expertly placing a strike past Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen in the dying minutes of the game.
The reward for winning the semi-final? A European final against Spain on Sunday. England’s Under-19s have beaten Spain in the final of a major tournament, the Nation will hope that the senior side can follow suit.
