Former World Champions France, edge past Belgium 1-0, to book their place in the quarter-finals. Les Bleus’ top scorer’s own goal grabbed the winner to break Belgian resistance.

It’s been a stuttering campaign for the Euro 2000 winners, but somehow they have managed to progress to a quarter-final. Like England boss Gareth Southgate, French boss Didier Deschamps has struggled to get the best out of his side.

Such details won’t matter now as France are into the quarter-final where Portugal awaits, which again will be far from an easy game. As for beaten Belgium, this is the end arguably for star players Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Jan Vertongen.
