This is not a new issue it’s an age-old one. Player welfare, health and looking after their potential fatigue is something the world of sport is so behind in. Football has its issues and so does cricket.

If you were thinking the more individual sports have conquered the problem, no they haven’t. Tennis’ final set could go on and on and on, but only within the last few years have they forced a tie-breaker in the final set.

Too slow in the making and should have happened a lot sooner. Sadly though for the game of tennis, they were in the headlines again when a match finished past 3 am, a match which featured Novak Djokovic.

Why I feel the need to mention that is that the Serb is one of the top draws on the circuit, fans come to see him play. Making him play till 3 am, how can that be a good spectacle? Of course, there are issues of well-being, but the powers that be in sports only seem to understand it when it’s broken down in economic terms.

Snooker is another one. Although from my layman’s knowledge, a snooker match hasn’t finished at 3 am, plenty have gone up to the 1 am mark. A certain Dennis Taylor and Steve Davies World Championship final come to mind.

It’s happened so many times, the player who had a late-night semi-final and goes the next day into the world final, is slow out of the blocks and looks and appears visibly tired.

It’s only until the evening session of that day, that are they able to get back into the game. Sport needs to accept, that it’s great they’re attracting fans from all corners of the globe, but they need to protect the employees better and help those sports become what they are.

Football and cricket might not be played late, but they both still have issues with how much they put on football and cricket players’ bodies. Cricketers travel some air miles and that’s not considering matches that need to be played.

The IPL for example, has become a tournament where players are pulling out of the tournament, to preserve their fitness and health. Football has the same issue too with the Copa America and the Euro 2024 tournament.

In life, no one should be given the chance to escape hard work, but there is a limit. This is coming from someone who finds it hard to sit down for five minutes as sitting around I am adamant turns you bone idle.
The better these athletes are looked after, the more games they can compete in, in their sport. Surely it’s as simple as that.
