The King of Clay Rafael Nadal was well beaten by the in-form Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The German Zverev did what only Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic (twice) and that was to beat Rafa on clay 6-3,7-6 (7-5),6-3.
Former world number one Nadal is ranked in 275th, due to a succession of injuries he has had. That doesn’t take anything away from Zverev however, the German did win a title last week.
This French Open is arguably one of the most open in many years due to the indifferent form of current World Number One Novak Djokovic. Maybe Roland Garros could be the tournament that sees the highly-rated Carlos Alcaraz start his domination of the sport.
As for Rafael Nadal, he did suggest French Open 2024 would be his last, but to be dumped out in such emphatic circumstances, the Mallorcan hinted, this might not be his swansong in Paris as first thought.
