With Leicester already securing the Championship title, there was still plenty to play for at the top and at the bottom of the Championship table. Ipswich Town who had been promoted from League One the season prior, were looking to join Enzo Maresca’s men in the top flight.
In what could have been a nervy afternoon due to what was at stake at Portman Road, turned out to be a comfortable one. Goals from Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson helped The Tractor Boys end their over 20-year wait to return to the big time after they beat already doomed Huddersfield 2-0.
Leeds United who were relegated from the Premier League, like Leicester were, a few weeks prior did seem set to secure the final automatic promotion place, but when it mattered most, sadly for The Lilywhites they weren’t able to get the results they needed.
Despite the wobble, Daniel Farke’s Leeds did have a chance to secure the final automatic promotion place. All they needed to do was beat Southampton, one of their big rivals for promotion.
Leeds fell short and lost 2-1 at Elland Road. So that meant that Leeds United would finish third and Southampton fourth. What’s proving to be a common theme when it comes to the play-off places, West Brom and Norwich dragged themselves into the final two positions.
After they too have suffered an indifferent bit of form The Baggies were able to confidently dispatch Preston aside 3-0. Norwich would go on to lose 1-0 to Birmingham, which would be enough to see The Canaries secure a top-six finish but would see Tom Brady’s Birmingham drop to the third tier of English football since 1995.
The Blues had fulfilled their side of the bargain, as they looked to desperately stay up, but Blackburn who are managed by former boss Birmingham City boss John Eustace, were able to defeat champions Leicester 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.
Plymouth who before the close of play needed a good result against Hull to avoid dropping straight back down to League One, beat Hull 1-0, who saw their play-off hopes ended after that defeat at Home Park.
So to round up our round-up. Leicester and Ipswich are promoted automatically. The Foxes go up as champions and Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys go up as runners-up.
Leeds, Southampton, West Brom and Norwich will be competing for the final promotion place when they contest the play-offs. Birmingham, Huddersfield and Rotherham have been relegated to League One.
