Not since Borussia Dortmund won the Bundesliga titles back-to-back in the early 2010s can one argue that German giants Bayern Munich have been in such dire straights.

Bayern have surrendered their title with the meekest of efforts. Granted, that’s a bit harsh and more credit needs to be given to Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, who are on course for a treble.

What is drawing the criticism is arguably, the past month or so and the way they crumbled against Leverkusen in the game which now appears to have been the one which settled the title.

England captain Harry Kane, who was signed from Tottenham Hotspur, recorded his best-ever scoring season on a personal level and former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane has been exceptional too.

So one would think, how are Bayern that far behind? My own opinion on the matter is that current boss Thomas Tuchel has not been able to get Bayern playing like Bayern.

In terms of personnel Kane, and his former Spurs colleague Eric Dier have been signed over the summer, but for me, the exclusion of Joshua Kimmich is close to unforgivable.

Kimmich is arguably one of the best in his position in the world. Both him and Leon Goretzka, it can be argued are one of the best pairings in Europe, but for some reason, Tuchel didn’t seem to fancy the 28-year-old Kimmich.

Despite the wrongs of this season at current, if the six-time Champions League winners beat their opponents Real Madrid all can be forgiven, well not all but some of this season.

Bayern Munich before this season were an 11-time defending Bundesliga champion, winning titles is in their DNA. For any manager who has been appointed, winning the league is arguably seen as a given.

In Real Madrid, they have an opponent who have won the Champions League for a record 14 times. Whereas The Bavarians have had a difficult campaign, they have all but sealed a 35th La Liga crown.

After battling past last season’s winners Manchester City, Los Blancos should not be taken lightly, but with them having a whole host of injuries at the back, this makes Carlo Ancelotti’s side vulnerable.

Having said that, Real overcame the threat of Haaland in the last round. For that reason alone, this is what makes this tie fascinating. Real Madrid have their luxury midfield and Bayern Munich have the Creme de la creme of strikers in German football this season, one Mr Harry Kane.

I have this down as Real Madrid going through over the two legs, but it won’t be easy by any stretch.
