Liverpool have come one step closer to appointing Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, after coming to an agreement with Feyenoord for their manager Arne Slot.

A deal worth up to £9.4 million has been agreed upon with the Dutch club, to release the former AZ Alkmaar manager a year early from his contract.

The 52-year-old Slot has become the first choice for The Reds it can be argued after Xabi Alonso the Bayer Leverkusen manager said he wants to stay in Germany for one more year.

Alonso’s decision made a few teams change their thinking in terms of management for the future, near future and present. Liverpool it appeared were set to appoint Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim, someone who I have rated quite highly.

The former midfielder has been linked frequently with jobs in the Premier League and if reports are to be believed, he is set to be appointed the West Ham United manager soon.

Such a decision seems surprising, usually because under the guidance of Michael Edwards, when they want someone, whether that be a player or even a manager, they get what they want.

This was the case with the then fresh-faced, fully rested ex-Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp. The Portuguese manager, who like others before him has been compared to Jose Mourinho, had a few factors that went against him.

Amorim does like to play football on the front foot, but the Liverpool board felt that soon-to-be ex-Feyenoord boss Arne Slot’s philosophy is closer to that of his soon-to-be predecessor Klopp.

Just like that, Liverpool are getting ready to embark on a new era. This should surely be a warning for the rest of the Premier League.
