Jannick Sinner fought back admirably to beat two-time Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev in five sets (3-6,3-6,6-4,6-4,6-3). After the 22-year-old Italian defeated world number one and 10-time winner Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semi-final, a new name was going to be carved on the trophy.
Russian Medvedev, who was a beaten finalist in 2022, after throwing away a two-set lead against Rafael Nadal, would suffer the same fate here. There’s no denying the former world number one’s ability as an elite tennis player.
Medvedev just came across a force of nature that was pushing/pulling in his direction. For the neutrals, a final such as this one is most certainly welcomed. Novak Djokovic who is a 25-time Grand Slam winner, wasn’t able to add to his impressive tally of slams here.
Instead, it would be the 22-year-old Jannick Sinner, the man from San Candido, Italy to hold the Australian Open title a loft in the Australian night sky.
