German legend Franz Beckenbauer has passed away aged 78. Beckenbauer was one of the most famous names in German football.

The 78-year-old won the World Cup with West Germany in 1974 and then as a manager with Germany in 1990. This would become a feat that Didier Deschamps of France would emulate.

Franz Beckenbauer played for Bayern Munich 582 times and won the German top flight as a manager and a player.

On and off the pitch, the former Bayern defender had a decorated career. Not only did Beckenbauer win a hat-trick of European Cups with Bayern as captain, he won the Bundesliga with Hamburg in 1982.

Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich’s great rivals paid tribute to Franz Beckenbauer. Uli Hoeness, Bayern’s honorary president and a former team-mate, described Beckenbauer as the “greatest personality the club has ever had”.

Current Germany manager Julien Nagelsmann also paid tribute to the legendary German defender. The passing of Beckenbauer is a continuation of a difficult week for the football community.

Last week, the football world was in a state of mourning after hearing of the tragic passing of ex-Brazil World Cup-winning player and assistant coach Mario Zigallo.
