In life, there are many lessons you can take from it. Being good to thy neighbour, and feeding the poor person are of course honourable traits to have, but here sports fans, even we were guilty of it, writing off Australia.
To put this into football terms, it’s like writing off the Germans. Why do we do that? Die Mannschaft have won four World Cups (only Brazil have more with five) and three European Championships.
Impressive as that is, Pat Cummins’ men are World Test Champions and before England won in UAE last year, were T20 World Champions too.
In this century only India and England (who are the defending champions) have won the cricket World Cup, but sports fans, I am sure you’re like me, just don’t learn.
I wrote off Australia’s chances of being competitive in this year’s World Cup, even before a ball is bowled.
Then when India and South Africa both defeated The Baggy Green, boy did it I get big for my boots.
I smugly wrote a piece that just maybe Temba Bavuma’s men have put the final nail in the coffin of Australia’s World Cup hopes.
The Baggy Green, have one foot through the exit door, or so it may have felt. Since that loss to The Proteas, Cummins’s men have won four on the bounce, including beating New Zealand by just five runs.
Tom Latham’s New Zealand, in pursuit of a record World Cup run chase, bravely fell short, despite Rachin Ravindra’s second century of the tournament.
What has been key to Australia’s resurgence and charge up the World Cup table is the form of players like David Warner.
The former vice-captain Warner in this World Cup has been a man reborn, as his Australia side. The Aussies have done this, not by reinventing the wheel either, but by just producing enough to win matches.
Sure Pat Cummins’ side will be facing India on 23rd November and Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten is no stroll in the park.
Whether they qualify for the semi-final this surely will go down as one never to be taken lightly in future.
We see India winning the whole thing, but The Baggy Green will be there, thereabouts.
