County champions Surrey retained their title to seal their 21st County Championship. Title rivals Essex, who needed to post 400 to stay in the hunt, crumbled to 211 all out.
Although history would say they were the first team to defend the championship back-to-back since Yorkshire in 2014-15, Surrey were reliant on Northants doing them a favour.
Tom Westley’s Essex in reply to Northants’ 369 all out, could post 211 all out in the first innings and 119 all out in the second.
Ben Sanderson, was one of the chief tormentors with an eight-wicket haul.
To add further salt to the wounds of losing out in a final day Championship tussle, speculation is rife that Sir Alistair Cook will retire at the end of this season.
Essex will be hoping they can add to their eight County Championship wins. Surrey who have 21 titles are somewhat behind Yorkshire (32 titles) to put their stake as County cricket’s best team.
