Arsenal and Tottenham shared the spoils in a pulsating North London Derby, the first of the Premier League season.

Last year, this fixture was comfortably won by title-chasing Arsenal, so going into this game, the Gunners would have been quietly confident.

Spurs, too had every reason to feel optimistic. The Lillywhites coming into this one, had won four and drawn one out of their first five games.

This sequence of results are the same as Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. In a game that saw two sides not able to be separated after 90 minutes, here at The Sports Buff, we discuss what we learned after the game.

Tottenham can live without Harry Kane. When Spurs’ star striker was sold to Bayern this summer, much was made about how they would cope, but in Son Heun-Min, they have an able goal scorer.

Ange ball is in full flow and maybe, just maybe if the England captain was in this side, he would disrupt the flow of the team.
A hard sell to convince someone that Tottenham are better without their record goal-scorer, but their impressive standing in the table is a reflection of how well they’re doing without Kane.

James Maddison is already looking like an absolute bargain and could very well be in the Premier League team of the season.

I only say this because Kevin De Bruyne, who is the best player in the Premier League in his position, will miss a lot of the campaign due to injury.

Also what I took from this game is that although early doors, this Tottenham team looks like it’s getting built in their manager’s image.
Last year they had a soft underbelly and looked timid, but not this year. This Spurs side will be very competitive.

As for Arsenal, based on today’s game it looks like David Reya is their new number one, for now at least anyway.

Manager Arteta has potentially created a problem that wasn’t there last season. The signing of Declan Rice was a good one, but there’s still the question of Arsenal’s supporting cast.

Kai Havertz again being on the periphery. Having said that, we still expect Arsenal to be competitive, but it appears they don’t have that relentless streak of last season.

Maybe it’s early doors though? Do let us know your thoughts in the comments.
