As football fans, we wait for two things when the season finishes , the return of our domestic league for the new season as well as the new Champions League season.

Tuesday and Wednesday marked the first match week of this year’s tournament. There was goals, plenty of goals and even one goal scored from an unexpected source.

In terms of the British representation, it was a mixed bag of results. Manchester City, Arsenal and Newcastle had positive results, but Manchester United and Celtic didn’t.

The Red Devils, although the score might be flattering to them, were well beaten by six-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich, even if the full-time score was 4-3.

Under-fire goalkeeper made a bad error for the first goal, but United can feel aggrieved for the penalty given against them, but they had one given in their favour in Paris, do you remember?

Even without that penalty, The Red Devils were out run in midfield. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka who are amongst the best in Europe, showed why as the Bavarians were too powerful on the night.

The much critcisded Alfonso Davies, who got a public slating from Erik Ten Haag, was outstanding on the night. United’s boss will learn not to do that again.

It was disappointment for Celtic too, The Bhoys lost 2-0 in Rotterdam to Feyenord, the Dutch champions.

Celtic weren’t too bad in this game, but their implosion proved costly as Brendan Rodgers away day blues continued.

To the more encouraging part for British clubs. Newcastle who are making their first appearance in the Champions League since the late Bobby Robson was their manager got a spirited 0-0 draw at the San Siro against AC Milan.

Out of all the games that were played, this was the only game that was goalless. The Magpies won’t mind about that too much, as they’re well in this group.

Holders and Premier League champions Manchester City had to come from a goal down to beat Red Star Belgrade 3-1.

To the surprise of pretty much all, Erling Haaland didn’t get on the score sheet, but he did provide the assist for Julian Alvarez’s opener.

Arsenal, who have not been in Europe’s top competition secured and eye-catching win against Dutch league leaders PSV Eindhoven.

PSV, who are managed by former Ajax Peter Bosz, were unbeaten in 26 games, until The Gunners shot them down with a superb display.

In the other games, 14-time winners Real Madrid, needed all of the 90 minutes plus stoppage time to beat plucky debutants Union Berlin 1-0 at the Bernabeu.

Jude Bellingham who has five goals already this season, tapped in his sixth goal in six games to break Union hearts.

There were some epic come backs in this weeks fixtures as well. Galatasaray and Copenhagen played out a four-goal thriller, but it will be the Danes that are annoyed most.

Byens Hold let a two-goal lead slip after having a man sent off. The game between Lazio and Ateltico also saw a comeback as the Italians left it to equalize against Aletico.

That equalizer came from an unlikely source as goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, glanced home a last-gasp leveller, which saw the Stadio Olympico erupt.

The 94th minute strike was one that Ciro Immobile would have been proud of. To round off this week’s Champions League round up, we need to mention Barcelona and Red Bull Salzburg.

Five-time winners Barcelona, who are undergoing transition, will not be seen by many as favourites for a sixth crown, but a thumping 5-0 win means they don’t deserve to be fully disregarded.

Last season’s surprise package, RB Salzburg, got their campaign off to an impressive start by beating Benfica 2-0 at the Estadio Da Luiz.
