Former Parma, Juventus and PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has retired from football aged 45.
Buffon, who won the World Cup with his native Italy in 2006, bids farewell to a fantastic career that spans four decades.
One blight on such a fantastic career was that Gigi Buffon wasn’t able to win the UEFA Champions League, another maybe was not winning the Euros with Italy.
He came close twice to winning the Champions League when his Juve side got to the final, twice. Barcelona and Real Madrid would be the two sides to put an end to Buffon’s Champions League hopes.
Buffon would also be on the wrong end of a European final, but this time it would be internationally as Spain beat The Azzuri 4-0 in the final.
The former Juventus goalkeeper was a pioneer for goalkeeping of his era, the way that Manuel Neuer is held for the modern-day goalkeeper of his era.
Goalkeepers tend to have longer careers than outfield players, but to play until you’re 45 and only just recently go down a division to play for Parma, is a testament to the man.
The football world will miss you, Gianluigi Buffon. The Sports Buff team wishes you well in your retirement.
