World Cup winner with France and former Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has joined Lille after leaving Camp Nou.
The 29-year-old, who started his career with Ligue 1 rivals Lyon, ended up not going back to his first club, due to Les Dogues having concrete interest.
Samuel Umtiti has signed a two-year deal with the former Ligue 1 winners. One can’t help but feel sad for the French centre-back, who before the 2018 World Cup in Russia was seen as one of the best in his position.
Now to compare him to free agent Phil Jones, now released by Manchester United, is a bit harsh to the former Barca man.
What both do have in common is that when both are fit, both are very talented, but both men have seen their careers blighted by injuries.
In Samuel Umtiti’s case, it’s good that he’s been able to get a move away from the Catalan giants. Moving to France can maybe help Umtiti rebuild his career after a nightmare four seasons.
Frenchman Umtiti did all he could to be available for the 2018 World Cup, but the sad reality was that it came too soon for his injured knee.
Let’s hope the world can see this quality centre-back recapture his form. World football is in short supply of quality centre-backs.
