Two-time ODI world champions and two-time T20 world champions are out of this year’s world cup. The Caribbean side who had to qualify for the tournament, lost three times in qualifying.

Saturday’s defeat to Scotland, (a seven-wicket loss), must surely be the tip of the iceberg for this great cricketing nation. A World Cup without the Windies is like a football World Cup without Italy, with this example, both are powerhouses in their respective sports.

If one tries to further look into the reason for the West Indies’ woes, it’s not quite so simple. Nicholas Pooran, Shai Hope, Johnson Charles, Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks and former skipper Jason Holder represents a lot of talent.

Sadly for the former two-time world champions, key players have not performed at the key times. For example Holder, he conceded 30 runs in a super over against the Netherlands.

To single someone out like this is very harsh admittedly so, I am a big fan of the Windies all-rounder, but sport has fine lines and in times like that, there’s no hiding.

There have been too many times in this World Cup qualifying tournament, that the West Indies’ batting has let them down. One of the golden rules in cricket? Get runs on the board, sadly Shai Hope’s, men fell short on several occasions.

Zimbabwe’s resurgence as a cricket nation and a Windies decline has meant sadly for India 2023, there will be no West Indies. Cricket fans, I am sure you remember what happened the last time The Calypso Kings were in town.

Commentating on the action, Ian Bishop and Sunil Badrinath were visibly upset by West Indies losing to Scotland. Gents, we cricket fans were the same too.

A World Cup without West Indies isn’t as good of a World Cup. The vibrancy that the team and its fans bring, will be missed.
