After experiencing a delay to the start of the eagerly anticipated second test, due to a protestor, Australia ended day one on top. The tourists, buoyed by their gutsy two-wicket win in the second test, got off to a good start.
Openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner put on a 73 for the first wicket, until Khawaja was bowled, after misjudging a delivery by debutant Josh Tongue.
Warner would follow his opening partner back into the pavilion shortly after, he too would be bowled by England’s debutant Tongue. If the hosts were thinking that this would open the floodgates, this would turn out to not be the case.
Arguably Australia’s two best batsmen, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, put on 102 for the third wicket. Ollie Robinson who has been doing a lot of talking off the pitch, did some on it by ending the partnership between the two men.
Labuschagne was out for 47 after being caught behind by Jonny Bairstow. From the England perspective, sadly they would endure more frustration as Travis Head would crash a 73-ball 77.
Head’s innings only ended when he played one big shot too many and got stumped by Bairstow of Joe Root’s part-time bowling. The Adelaide Strikers captain played a very selfless knock and one which was needed for the match situation.
Cameron Green would lose his wicket in the same over, but day one was comfortably Australia’s day. England might regret not playing a spinner for this one.
Although they do have Joe Root to bowl some overs of spin, a seasoned pro, with the greatest respect to Root is arguably what The Three Lions need. Tomorrow morning and the first hour could be crucial, not just for this test, but rather the series.
O and one thing, England need to get Steve Smith out, he’s on 85 not out. To stand any chance, they will need to get him out quickly. That’s easier said.
