Relegated Southampton have named Swansea manager Russell Martin as their new manager on a three-year deal. The former Norwich defender Martin has agreed a deal at St Mary’s till 2026.

The 37-year-old Martin guided The Swans to 10th last year in the Championship. Martin replaces caretaker boss Ruben Selles after the Spaniard wasn’t able to keep the South Coast club in the Premier League.

Russell Martin’s move to Southampton had been all but confirmed in May, but wrangling of the cost of compensation to bring the former MK Dons manager to St Mary’s held up the appointment.

Fellow relegated side Leicester City were said to be interested in signing Martin, but Southampton acted decisively and got their man. Swansea are said to be interested in Barnsley manager Michael Duff.

Duff lead the South Yorkshire side to the League One play-off final. Now that Martin has been confirmed as the new Southampton manager, The Swans can firm up their interest in Michael Duff.

Southampton’s new manager comes into the job after The Saints lost their 11-year top flight status. Last year in what was a tough year for the club saw them have three managers in a season (Ralph Hassenhuttl, Nathan Jones and his assistant Ruben Selles).
