Reigning County champions Surrey produced one of the best performances of all time to chase down 500 against Kent, to win by five wickets. The home side who skittled Surrey out for just 145 in the first innings, must have felt they were in charge of proceedings.
How wrong they were. To be fair stand-in skipper Jack Leaning had did all he could for the first three quarters of the game.
His side reduced the opposition to a low total and they themselves scored 301 all out in the first innings, thanks to a Jordan Cox century (133) and a score 344 in the second respectively, which was in turn thanks to a good innings of 79 by Hamidullah Qadri.
Rory Burns’ Surrey side are not champions without merit. They can play the champagne cricket, but here they needed some grit and steel and were indebted to Jamie Smith’s counter- attacking knock (114 off just 77 balls).
Smith’s knock seemed to inject some belief into the County champions that they could just maybe chase this target down. No doubt they would have been feeling dejected initially having to survive or chase down 500 to win. Ben Foakes (124) and Dom Sibley (140 not out) also played their part in this historic win.
Surrey seemed home and dry, but when Will Jacks was out for 19 and the score being 461-5, there was a potential spanner in the works, but Jordan Clark played the right innings for the situation and calmed any nerves that the visitors might have been having.
Record breaking Surrey today beat their previous highest record score in a fourth innings of 478/9 scored against Leicestershire at Grace Road in 2001. On this occasion, Surrey were victorious.
