It’s one of the most overused clichés in football, ‘too good to go down’. In the case of 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City, they’re too good to go down, surely.

Çağlar Söyüncü, Wout Faes, Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans are just some of the names, esteemed names at The King Power Stadium.

The names, I have mentioned are of Premier League quality, there’s no two ways about it. What’s been the problem for The Foxes is, that they have conceded a mind-boggling amount of goals.

Selling Kasper Schmeichel seemed strange then, but catastrophic now! The Dane, son of legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, was a form of calmness and assurance back there.

With him gone, both Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen struggled to hold down a spot in goal. Star defender Söyüncü, who was a regular in Brendan Rodgers’ tenure, became out of favour and arguably the defence lacked cohesion thereafter.

On the other hand, it should be pointed out, the Turkey international has been out of form too. Right-back Ricardo Pereira, who not long ago was arguably one of the most sort after players in the league, just can’t stay fit, which is a real shame for Leicester and the player.

The sacking of Brendan Rodgers who took the 2016 Premier League winners to a Europa Conference League semi-final two seasons as well as guiding them to a maiden FA Cup win and two top-five finishes, was sadly inevitable.

Leicester’s form post-World Cup was terrible. From being eighth, The Foxes dropped into the relegation zone. Northern Irishman Rodgers was shown the door before the end of the season, Rodgers’ replacement Dean Smith was unable to keep the East Midland side in the Premier League.

Despite winning against Conference League finalists West Ham on the final day of the season, Everton’s 1-0 win against Bournemouth, made the result at The King Power Stadium, irrelevant.

Fellow relegated side Southampton and their relegation has been over more bizarre. The Saints beat relegation rivals Everton at Goodison Park, as well as doing the double over Chelsea and gaining a spirited draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

With results like that, Southampton will be left bewildered too. To sum up Southampton’s season in two results, they got hammered 4-1 by Bournemouth, but drew 4-4 with Liverpool.

This season has been very unique, I don’t think we will ever see anything like this ever again. The third relegated side, Leeds too did spend a lot of money on players, just like the other two relegated sides did do.

What’s different with The Lillywhites is, they have been consistently poor with their results, despite having a very talented playing squad. The only good thing to come out of the relegation of these three clubs is only beneficial to potential suitors.

Tottenham are said to be interested in James Maddison, as were Newcastle. Aston Villa have been rumoured to be interested in signing Belgian Tielemans. Never in my living memory has been there potentially so many players who could be bought from relegated sides.

All three sides invested heavily on their teams, but sadly for them, not wisely as none of them could avoid the drop. The key for all of these sides is to try and keep their team together as much as possible.
If miraculously they can do that then, two of the three sides should get promoted.
