When the news broke, I couldn’t believe it. Karim Benzema after 14 seasons, will be leaving Real Madrid. French striker Benzema has won everything that a player could win in club football.

Signed in the summer of 2009, alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, the former Lyon man would outlast them both. Benzema, for a large part of his time in Spain, wonderfully played a supporting role to Portuguese legend Ronaldo, who broke many personal records whilst at the Bernabeu.

Due to his selflessness, Karim Benzema was misunderstood and under-appreciated. The Frenchman has been at Real for 14 seasons, so seeing the bad in reality was always going to happen.

It was a tough period for Benzema, who was subjected to fierce booing and criticism from Gary Lineker, the former Barcelona striker. Admirably though, the 35-year-old came through it and when CR7 would leave he seamlessly slotted into the role of the main man.

Last year, was his best year for Real Madrid yet. Karim Benzema won the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup, but it was the personal honour he received, the 35-year-old won the Balon D’or.

Former Lyon striker Karim Benzema leaves Real having won three La Liga titles and four Champions League titles. As per Fabrizio Romano, Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad are the favourites to sign the Frenchman.

Karim Moustafa Benzema, you have been a fantastic player for 14 years! You will be missed. The Sports Buff team wishes you the best in the future, wherever that may take you.
