For Dutch giants Ajax, this season has gone from bad to worse and is now at its lowest point. Ajax chief executive Edwin van Der Sar has resigned from his role. The former Holland goalkeeper is leaving his post with immediate effect.

Ajax Amsterdam had been the champions for the last two seasons under the management of now Manchester United manager Erik Ten Haag.
The then Dutch champions were a well-oiled machine and bar Benfica and other sides from the Portuguese and French leagues, their players were amongst the most sourced.

Well, that’s what it felt like. This season, however, Ajax’s season has turned into utter chaos. The appointment of Alfred Schreuder was at face value a good one, but things turned badly very quickly.

De Joden unfortunately looking back now, seemed destined for some challenges. Marc Overmars left his role (for misconduct) and replacing him wasn’t done correctly as the new man in the role Klaas Jan Huntelaar hasn’t been able to make his mark like Overmars did in the same role.

For a club that’s seen as the model club by many of Europe’s admirers, Ajax were just so disjointed. Jonny Heitinga was appointed until the end of the current season, but their former defender could only lead them to third.

De Joden missed out on Champions League football, for the first time since 2009. Naturally, the higher-ups at Ajax were going to be under scrutiny for such failings and Edwin Van Der Sar was the sacrificial lamb here.

Maybe Huntelaar might join him, but one thing is for certain it’s going to be a challenging summer for one of Holland’s most iconic clubs.
