Luton are promoted to the top flight for the first time in 31 years after a 6-5 penalty shootout win over Coventry City. Going into this final, both sides were competing towards the bottom of the English football league pyramid, in the case of Luton Town they were in the National League and had a 30-point deduction.
The Hatters were close to going out of business, but they managed to survive. In the last 10 years, they have come back from the brink and will be in the Premier League from next season. In the normal season, Luton finished third above sides such as Middlesbrough and Sunderland, who with the greatest respect are more of household names than they are.
Luton Town weren’t prepared to let that, affect them. Epitomised by long-time servant Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu, who has been at the club for 10 years. Ruddock-Mpanzu has been there through the lows and is there for the club’s ultimate high.
The Hatters were a top-flight club but were relegated the season before the Premier League season was formed. Thirty long years later they have had to wait and endure last season’s play-off heartbreak, but all that’s irrelevant now as they’re back in England’s top flight.
A lot has changed since their last time in England’s top tier. IPhone was a pipe dream and the world hadn’t even been exposed to dial-up internet. In finals, pardon the cliché then can only be one winner, this time it was Luton, but commiserations to Coventry who have battled so hard to get here.
Like Luton, they have had financial issues and were even playing in the third division, but like Luton Town, they progressed up the footballing pyramid and agonisingly miss out on a return to the Premier League for the first time in 20 years.
The Sky Blues have now established themselves in the Championship, they’re a credit to the City. Mark Robins has managed them brilliantly. The former Manchester United striker’s challenge now is to try and keep his best players at the club.
Luton manager Rob Edwards will have a similar challenge too. Players like Carlton Morris will be attracting attention from rival clubs for sure. In the case of Welshman Edwards, it’s been a fitting end to the season for him personally.
At the start of the season, he was sacked by Watford after just 11 games. It’s amazing how fortunes can turn around so quickly. The Hornets will be ruing their decision to let the former Forest Green Rovers manager get sacked now.
