A resolute display in Holland saw West Ham join fellow English side Manchester City in getting through to a European final, their first since 1976. The Hammers who were winning 2-1 on aggregate won 1-0 on the night thanks to a late Pablo Fornals goal.

This is the second successive European semi-final that the East London side have been in, having lost last year’s Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

History wasn’t to repeat itself for David Moyes’ side as they were resolute on the night against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, who warmed up for this game with a 5-1 win against FC Emmen in the Eredivisie.

As impressive and dogged as West Ham were in the Netherlands, their passage to the final and their win on the night was marred after AZ’s Ultra’s appeared to go towards the friends and family of The Hammers players.

UEFA have said they will be investigating that incident. An unsavoury end for a good win for West Ham but also an encouraging campaign for Alkmaar too, who are fourth in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Awaiting West Ham will be Fiorentina who defeated Swiss Giants FC Basel 3-1 over Extra-time. The final of the UEFA Conference League will be on 7th June in Prague.
