Brentford and striker Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months after he accepted a charge of breaking football association betting rules.

Toney isn’t the first to be charged with such offences. The former Newcastle and Peterborough striker also been charged £50,000 and warned about his future conduct for 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules.

His suspension starts immediately, although the 27-year-old can return to training with Brentford four months before it ends on 17 September.

Toney will not be allowed to play again until 17 January, 2024. England right-back Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 weeks whilst at Atletico Madrid for giving out information for others to place a bet on in regards to his move from Tottenham to Atletico.

In 2017 Joey Barton, who was a Burnley player at the time, was banned for 18 months after admitting placing 1,260 football-related bets over a 10-year period. Barton’s ban was reduced to 13 months on appeal.

In reaction to his ban, Ivan Toney took to Instagram to say he was ‘disappointed’. Although eight months will be taken off a promising career, despite what others may write Toney should be able to resume his career.

Daniel Strurridge formerly of Liverpool was another player who was banned by the FA in regards to betting rules. He was able to carry on his career in Turkey as were the other players able to carry on their careers.

The only exception was Joey Barton who was coming to the end of his career.
