You can’t keep the old dog down they say and in this case, how true of a statement that has been. Former Leeds, Newall Old Boys, Lazio and Ateltic Bilbao and of manager many other sides Marcelo Bielsa has been confirmed as the new manager of Uruguay.

The two-time world champions needed a new manager when Diego Alonso, resigned following the World Cup where they exited in the group stage. Marcelo Broli had been the man in interim charge since February.

For El-Loco, this will be his chance to repair some damage to his reputation that was damaged after his dismissal at Elland Road. For both manager and Uruguay, I think this is a good appointment.

Bielsa is a manager who loves to work from top to bottom when he’s in a managerial role, something he famously did at Leeds United of course. La Celeste are in a transition period.

Stalwarts such as Edison Cavani, Diego Forlan, Louis Suarez, Fernando Muslera, and Diego Godin have all retired, so now it’s time for the young bucks to take the baton and run with it.

The football world will see the return of the world-famous squat. Fair play to the man, I am half his age and my knees now aren’t as resilient as that. Let’s hope his Uruguay side can be as resilient as his knees are.
