Two goals from Ilkay Gunaodguan and one from goal-machine Erling Haaland saw Manchester win comfortably 3-0 in the end at relegation-threatened Everton.
The home side would end up paying dearly for Mason Holgate’s miss. Before that point, The Toffees were the better side and it appeared that the confidence gained from Monday’s surprise 5-1 win against Brighton, inspired Sean Dyche’s men here.
Before the game, which had to be rearranged due to the Eurovision song contest, that wasn’t music to City manager Pep Guardiola’s ears. Man City before taking the lead, were quite hitting the right notes.
Although a loss for Everton, crucially they managed to compete and stay in the game. A loss would have been something many would have expected before the game, but a 3-0 reverse although damaging, still means they have a better goal difference than relegation rivals Leeds.
If they were to have won today, it would have been a bonus, but to lose as they did was to be expected. Just one point separates Everton from the bottom three.
With Nottingham Forest and Leeds both failing to win this weekend, Everton have escaped a big defeat, with as minimal damage as they could have suffered.
Next up is a potentially winnable game against Wolves at Molineux and then already-safe Bournemouth visit Goodison Park on the final day of the season. As for Manchester City, they’re just two wins away from retaining the Premier League title, and also winning the league three times in a row.
Go on Pep, admit it maybe Eurovision isn’t that bad for Man City after all!
