Southampton relegated to the Championship

Southampton’s 11-year stay in the Premier League is over after a 2-0 home loss to Fulham. In a form of irony, the team that many expected to go down has put the final nail in the coffin of a side that always seems to find mid-table security in the end.

One of the reasons for their struggles has been that this term, they got rid of the popular Ralph Hassenhutl, only to replace him with Nathan Jones. At the time, I wasn’t thrilled or inspired by the appointment, and duly I have been proven to be right.

Caretaker manager Ruben Selles, who won two of his first three games as manager, brought some expectations they might survive the drop, but that was as good as it got for the Spaniard.

Having drawn with Arsenal and Manchester United as well as defeating Leicester and Everton in the league and dumping Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup, the stats make for even more grim reading for The Saints.

Southampton have been relegated before, but back then, they went down to League One. With the amount of outlay spent on new recruits in the transfer window, I paint a grim picture I am afraid.

James Ward-Prowse and Carlos Alcaraz, who has impressed, will surely need to be sold. This could be a very turbulent time for Southampton like what it had been for Leeds who had to wait 15 years to return to the Premier League.

With the Saints down, now two more teams will join them, but who will they be?
