West Ham keep their European dream on track with a 2-1 comeback victory of Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. David Moyes’ were up against it and hopes of a first trophy since 1980 were hanging by a thread.
Alphonse Areola made a mess of saving Tijjani Reijnders’ low shot four minutes before the break. Despite that set-back there was jubilant home support. Spurred on, West Ham turned the tie on its head after half-time.
Former Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan to thank for offering them a way back into the contest when he recklessly punched Jarrod Bowen in the face as he arrived late to challenge for a high ball.
Needless to say the referee pointed to the spot after that challenge. Said Benrahma dispatched the resultant penalty with a powerful shot into the corner.
Fifteen minutes from time Michail Antonio hit the winner from close range, sending the home support in raptors. It’s been a tough season for West Ham and David Moyes, but a potential final in Prague on 7 June awaits them.
The second leg is on Thursday 18th May.
