Scotland Rugby Union head coach Gregor Townsend has extended his stay with the Scotland national team. Townsend stays till 2026, which ended somewhat of a stand-off with the Scottish Rugby Union.

With a World Cup in 2026, the last thing Scotland would have wanted was to be having to search for a head coach at this time. Just like sport in general, it’s amazing how fortunes can change so quickly, it wasn’t too long ago the former Scotland international Townsend was fighting to keep his job.

Reportedly the boss at SRU were looking to hire a coach from New Zealand. One coach, who missed the chance was Warren Gatland who has gone back to Wales.

Wayne Pivac, Gatland’s compatriot, who struggled in his time as head coach of Wales, was never going to be in the running for the Scotland job. Joe Schmidt who impressed with Ireland could have been another potential candidate.

As Townsend has committed to his country to 2026, thus extending his stay as coach which will take him to nine years at the helm. The extension has been justified as Scotland are now fifth in the world rankings and also had a good record of late against old enemy England.

Gregor Townsend was reportedly eyeing up a job in France if he didn’t stay with Scotland. Maybe look at a job there when your career is coming to an end, so you can get one last big payday.
