Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets after 18 years, has announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season. The former Spain midfielder, 34, played 718 matches for Barcelona – the third-most in the club’s history.

In this period, his list of honours won with the club is staggering, they include eight La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey’s, 7 Spanish Super Cups and three Champions Leagues.

Just for good measure, let’s add three Club World Cups, and three European Super Cups to the list of honours won with the Catalan club. We haven’t even got to the international honours yet.

Defensive midfielder Busquets, who retired from international football in December, was brought into the first team by legendary manager Pep Guardiola in 2018 and was a part of the famous midfield that included his now manager Xavi and former teammate Iniesta.

At club level and internationally the trio won the 2010 World Cup and 2012 World Cup, in fact, they won an unprecedented three trophies in a row on the International stage.

Good things must end and for Barcelona, the end of Busquet’s career is a big one. Maybe Frekkie De Jong can emerge from the shadows of such a legendary player, but with him being a sellable commodity, I wouldn’t count on that.

As for Sergio Busquets, there were rumours that he was due to sign for Al-Hilal alongside Jordi Alba, and Lionel Messi. I personally see the truth in these rumours.

After being such a long-serving servant at the club, Busquets deserves a last big payday. Where ever you do end up Sergio, the sports desk at The Sports Buff, wishes you the best!
