With the news of Celtic being confirmed as champions of Scotland for the 53rd time, things couldn’t get worse for Glasgow Rangers, or could they?
Well, sorry sports fans, here I will take a look through a half-full glass I am afraid of the current plight of Scottish giants Rangers. In short, it’s not good, but The Gers have been essentially out of business and have started again from the ground up, kind of.
From being in Scotland’s third division to being back in the Scottish Premier League, Rangers have gradually earned their place back amongst Scotland’s elite.
Admittedly, not quite as bad as years gone by, Rangers’ plight isn’t very good. Yes, they were well beaten in the title race for the past two seasons, but now manager Michael Beale has an almighty rebuild on his hands.
The rebuild starts surely with the need to address the impending departures of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, both of whom will not be offered new deals according to Beale.
For the fans, this will surely be the last thing they would have wanted to have heard. In the case of Columbian striker Morelos, who was the subject of a failed £18 million bid from Lille, just why didn’t they sell him?
Yes, the 26-year-old was bought in the region of £1 million, but a chance for a £17 million profit has been passed! Something similar in regards to Ryan Kent too.
The issue I have with Kent’s departure is, that he too could have been sold when his value was high, the departure has been poorly handled by the powers that be.
The list of players that could depart will be increasing. Scotland international Ryan Jack, fellow midfielders Steven Davis and Scott Arfield, veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor and centre-half Filip Helander, who has not played this season, are the other first-team players out of contract.
Swede Helander was signed for £6 million, for SPL standards this is a big outlay, but yet again stands to gain nothing if the former Parma man is moved on.
Manager Michael Beale has said, “There’s one or two we’ve offered contracts to”. Challenging times for Rangers await them, but they have been there before and come back.
Scottish football will be hoping they come back. Nothing is better than a competitive Old Firm, right?
