Napoli are champions for the first time in 33 years. A 1-1 draw against Udinese was all that was needed to send fans of the Naples side into raptures.
The last time The Little Donkeys won the title, they had a world-class talent in the late Diego Maradona, but it can be argued that this was a true team effort.
Of course, Nigerian striker Victor Osimehn who initially struggled to settle into life in Italy due to injury amongst other things, has been key this season. It was his equaliser in the 52nd minute, which meant Aurelio De Laurentiis and co can celebrate.
De Laurentiis, who is seen and I still as someone who can be quite eccentric to his credit has helped rebuild this Napoli team to title-winning standard. Players like Osimehn, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and South Korean centre-back Kim Min-Jae have been invaluable to the cause.
After so many years of so nearly, yet so far this win for Napoli will go long in the memory, for the chairman and the coach Luciano Spelletti. The veteran coach who won titles in Russia, hadn’t until yesterday won a domestic title in his homeland.
Having done a respectable job with Roma, a troubled stint with Inter Milan damaged Spelletti’s reputation ever so slightly. So this title win, just Napoli’s third in their history, would have been just that bit sweeter for their 68-year-old boss.
How former players Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibally wished they were a part of this. Those two players were real Napoli stalwarts. It maybe can be argued that the team that the Napoli legends were in that went close to winning the title, only to agonisingly fall short, was the springboard for a night like the 4th May.
Congratulations to Luciano Spelleti’s Napoli team, title winners for the first time since 1990. If Diego Maradona was ever to get knowledge of this title win, many years after his passing, then we’re sure he would be smiling knowing the fact that The Little Donkey are champions of Italy again.
The next challenge for the new champions of Italy is to try and keep as much of this squad together as already there are rumours that Europe’s top clubs are after their top players.
Europe’s elite have mercy!
