In one of the least shocking bits of sporting news to come out today, it’s been confirmed that Lionel Messi will leave French champions and this season’s champions-elect PSG at the end of the season.
The Argentinian World Cup-winning captain, who spent 17 years at Barca, only to be forced to move to the Parc De Princes at the start of last season, has surprisingly struggled to win the Paris Saint Germain fans over.
Many have scapegoated Messi for their side’s struggles. After an initially slow start for his standards, Lionel Messi has scored 31 goals and contributed 34 assists in 71 games for the French side.
For mere footballing mortals, that might be respectable for them, but one of the greatest footballers of all time, arguably not.
Those stats early in his PSG career even shows that one of the greatest the game has ever produced even needed some time to settle into new surroundings.
The easiest thing to do sometimes is to blame Messi. But for large parts of last season he like the other star forwards for PSG were stuck in a system that benefitted none of them.
Even still though 65 goals and assists in 71 games is respectable, I won’t hear a bad word against those stats. Cynics of Messi’s time will say his stats were the reason his time in Paris will come to an end, but we think realistically even PSG, one of football’s financial powerhouses is opting to tighten the purse strings.
The official line from the club is that they’re looking towards bringing younger talent into the team, which does fall in line with how Sporting Director Louis Campos has operated when at other clubs.
With the French club saying then surely the time that Sergio Ramos has left at the club and Neymar too, isn’t much. Back to the topic of Messi. We feel as much as he’s fluttering his eyelashes to Juan Laporta at Barcelona, we feel either Al-Hilal of the Saudi Arabian League or a stint in the MLS await.
