So a Manchester derby it is then

In club football, there is something of a theme going on. In the Champions League semi-final, one of them will see a Milan derby as Inter will be up against Real, a repeat of the 2003 semi-finals, where Inter despite playing at the San Siro would end up losing the tie on away goals.

The reason for that was simply due to the fact that Internazionale share their illustrious ground the San Siro, with cross-city rivals AC Milan. Those were the days, of away goals, and golden goals, football has changed too much, I miss the old version.

Another famous rivalry in club football is between two Manchester clubs from English football, City and United.

Man United are of course the more established opponents as far as history is concerned, but the current Pep’s City side are all but certain to be the only other side, bar United to win three successive Premier League titles.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired some 10 years ago, Manchester City have won four of the last five Premier League titles and seems odds on to make it five from the last six, Man United in that time? They have won zero.

Liverpool have won one, as has Leicester City too. The FA Cup final, if The Red Devils do win the tournament, will not only end Man City’s treble hopes but give them a cup double for the first time since 2017.

It’s all set for an intriguing semi-final in the Champions League between the two Milan clubs and a wonderful spectacle is hopefully in store for the FA Cup final where Man United will play Manchester City.

There was me thinking football has gone too commercialised, but a nice bit of local pride is at stake where communities are brought together all in the name of local bragging rights.

Maybe this is nature helping football fans, remember why we find football so great in the first place.
