Stage freight?

They have been the feel-good story of this season, but over the past month, maybe less Napoli have endured somewhat of stuttering form as they try to secure their third Scudetto title in their history.

The Naples side under the leadership of veteran coach Luciano Spelletti, have been close to floorless, before the last month. Big wins over Juventus, and Milan this year, emphatic wins they were too, seemed to set the precedent that this Napoli team are ready for a serious title assault of some near misses over the years.

Even in Europe too, they seem to be in with a shout of progressing to their first Champions League semi-final. It makes their achievement all the more impressive of the season so far.

But results such as Napoli 0-4 AC Milan was a tough watch for fans of The Little Donkeys and also a 1-0 reverse against the same opponent in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Being just a goal down is hardly a mountain to climb, Milan are seven-time winners of the Champions League of course, so will naturally have the know-how at this stage of the tournament.

But it will concern fans, to an extent that their team aren’t racing towards their first title win since Diego Maradona spearheaded their side in the 1989/90 season.

But with just 11 points to achieve in eight games, then surely they couldn’t throw it away from here? I would have thought not, but Napoli manager Spalletti would want the title secured sooner rather than later.

We have made a mention of this Napoli side, a side that has been superbly assembled after the loss of some key players such as Kalido Koulibally and Lorenzo Insigne, but the players that have come and the emergence of Victor Osimhen, puts this title win into perspective if they see it out of course.

For the sake of football, many will hope that Napoli, wraps up this title win sooner rather than later. This reminds me of Liverpool’s first Premier League title in the 19/20 season, where arguably they too stuttered over the line.

Football fans, enjoy this Napoli team whilst we can, sorry to be Mr Doom & Gloom, but Osimehn will no doubt be sold and so will star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as well as South Korean centre-back Kim Min Jae too.

Yes, football is a team game, but these three have been outstanding this year and have formed. Remember the Napoli team of 2022/23, they seem set to write their name in Napoli folklore.
