To sum up a very haphazard season, Leicester City have announced the appointment of former, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, till the end of the season. Smith, whose last job was at Norwich joins a club in a perilous position in the table.
The Foxes are 19th in the table and are a side very short of confidence. The 51-year-old is a very able manager and has had periods of success at the clubs that he has been at, but with the greatest respect, this appointment is underwhelming.
There have been many respectable names linked to the manager’s job at Leicester, such as Champions League-winning manager Rafael Benitez, so to go from that, to where they have, just emphasises my point.
It’s somewhat of a recent trend in the Premier League, but most clubs are hiring interims, the football equivalent of try before you buy. Short term naturally the thought is survival, but the appointment of Dean Smith is poor planning.
Readers of my previous work will be left scratching their heads at my perceived stinging comments about former Brentford manager Smith. The grievance isn’t with Dean Smith, but rather the decision makers at Leicester.
That in itself is something I can’t believe I am writing because, in these past five seasons or so, Leicester City have epitomised the meaning of a well-run football club.
For former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, this appointment is almost a nothing to lose everything to gain kind of scenario. Just like his predecessor, he favours a more attractive brand of football, so in that sense getting his ideas across shouldn’t be an issue.
