It’s been a busy day in the Premier League on the pitch, but off the pitch too as Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers have been sacked by Chelsea and Leicester respectively.
This has brought the number of Premier League managers’ sackings to 12. In the first part of the season, there weren’t too many managerial sackings, but with the end of the season looming, and the relegation dog fight hotting up, many Premier League clubs have opted for a change to try and stave off relegation.
Nottingham Forest and West Ham United are the only two managers not to opt for change. In terms of the sacking of former Leicester City manager Rodgers and now former manager of Chelsea Potter, which is the reason which prompted me to write this, The Sports Buff is not happy.
Managers get paid handsomely, but in the case of these two, they were expected to work miracles. Northern Irishman was given next to zero backing in the last few transfer windows.
Harry Souttar signed for Leicester from Stoke, how Brendan Rodgers wishes it was Harry Houdini. In the case of Graham Potter his Chelsea side has signings galore.
There was never an issue of getting players through the door, the problem was with the correct players entering. With the examples of both men, both are needed.
The sacking of these two men, who have not been given the correct support for varying reasons is setting a dangerous precedent in the game.
If a manager rejects an approach he’s being loyal, if he looks to move to a bigger job, rather than being aspirational, he’s disloyal. If a chairman gets rid of a manager whose been loyal to him, then it was a hard decision, nothing personal but its results and it’s a business decision.
Managers aren’t afforded the same logic. No wonder why Talksport is filled with ex-pros.
