It was a matter of when and not if. Tottenham Hotspur and their now former manager Antonio Conte have parted company, by mutual consent.
Conte’s former assistant Christian Stellini, who did deputise for his Italian boss this season as he was getting his gall bladder removed, takes over for the rest of the season.
Assisting Stellini will be former caretaker manager Ryan Mason. It wasn’t too long ago when former Spurs and Hull midfielder Mason was sitting in the manager’s hot seat (all be it on a caretaker basis), after another big name appointment, that time it was Jose Mourinho, didn’t work out.
But that’s not fair to say surely. The Special One was sacked days before a cup final against a beatable Manchester City. A cup final that he got Spurs to.
Chairman Daniel Levy is in smack bang the same position as he was when he sacked Jose. This time round, he’s decided to act swiftly by appointing Stellini.
Time will tell of course, but this decision comes across as Deja Vu as if Daniel Levy and co haven’t learnt their lesson when Jose got sacked. Why Tottenham have gone for the Man United handbook by hiring interim managers I don’t know.
With United, it worked with Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer when they had an interim manager for the early parts of the Norwegian’s tenure. Famously Ole was declared to be at the wheel’, in that now only too famous rant.
Will Conte’s assistant be able to repeat anything like the initial success of Ole? Only time will tell, but the Italian will need talismanic vice-captain. A notoriously hard man to please, Levy will need to be pleased and please quickly.
With managers Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine all out of work and now ex-Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has lost his job is on the list of managers who are too talented to be out of work for too long.
One man who was out of work was former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, but with him now being appointed Bayern Munich boss, Tottenham’s search pool of managerial talent is smaller.
Whatever you do Daniel, don’t do like what you did before you appointed Antonio Conte, where you interviewed every man and his dog for the role.
