Life begins at 40

Hello, good afternoon sports fans, it’s, me Ayyaz Malik aka The Sports Buff. I hope you’re well, looking after yourself and are in good health. Sports fans, we need to talk about sports, it’s cricket we need to talk about to be more precise and Jimmy Anderson to be more exact than that.

The Burnley Express is like the Cristiano Ronaldo of cricket. Either the man is in a time machine, or he’s Benjamin Button, who was in some form of a time machine.

Jimmy Anderson at 40 is playing test cricket to the highest level, and my achievement at 36, is doing 50 press-ups in a row, but even then when I have done those I am panting loud enough that the next-door neighbours would be wondering what’s that noise?

We have had a chat about Jimmy before; https://the-sports-buff.com/2021/03/25/james-anderson-the-man-who-can-do-it-on-a-cold-night-in-stoke/

Players have usually long retired at , either playing golf or then securing the luxurious gig of talking about cricket for sports broadcasters. I won’t envy a former cricketer who does that, it’s a good gig.

Anderson though? He has been top of the test bowling charts on six different occasions and at 40 years old is the oldest person to get top spot. Previous world number one was Australia captain Pat Cummins, with him moving down the rankings he’s gone Down Under? I worked hard for that pun.

Ravi Ashwin who has been giving Australia sleepless nights in their current test series moves up to second and Cummins, whose side have struggled in their Indian tour is third.

James Anderson is a freak of nature. Anderson does have Broad partnering him in the attack, but I feel that Jimmy’s former new ball bowling partner won’t last as long as he has.

Stuart Broad has had to be dropped a few times. This new England team, the core of it is young dynamic, fresh and fearless, but James Anderson at 40 years old is still a key part of it.

Fair play to you James Michael Anderson OBE. You’re a once-in-a-generation player, there won’t be another you, maybe some like you, but never another you.
