Perth Scorchers won a fifth BBL title with a thrilling five-wicket win over Brisbane Heat. The Scorchers, just like last year were indebted to their brilliant captain Ashton Turner, whose 50 from 32 balls steadied the changing tide in the match.
Perth were at their home stadium and were heavy favourites going into the final, especially having beaten Brisbane Heat twice in the group stages. To The Heat’s credit, they won three matches out of four, as well as the knock-out games, to get into the final.
It was Jimmy Pierson’s men who batted first and posted what appeared to be a slightly below-par 175-7. It could have been worse for Brisbane, but a six off the last ball just gave them something to bowl at.
Stevie Eskinazi and Cam Bancroft opened up for the defending champions and they started the Perth Scorchers innings well, but a very comical and dozy piece of cricket from Eskinazi, slowly helped the visitors get back into the game.
What started off as 32-1, quickly became 54-3 and Perth were in danger of losing their title maybe. Cometh the hour cometh the man, and Perth’s commander and chief Turner scored a second successive fifty in BBL finals.
His 54 off 32 balls, helped steady the ship, alongside Josh Inglis, who made 26 off 22 balls. Both men fell quickly having put on 80 together for the fourth wicket.
Having seemed to have been in control of the final, Perth Scorchers were in danger of throwing it away. Not to be overawed by the pressure Australia Under 19 captain Cooper Connolly scored 25 off just 11 balls.
Youthful fearlessness and the experience of Nick Hobson, who hit a six and a four to confirm the win, were key to the Perth Scorchers. A brilliant final to end a superb tournament.
Nathan McSweeney top scored with 41 from 37 balls for Brisbane Heat, but his innings proved to be in vain. Just like they were this season, Perth will be the team to beat again this season.
